Obsolete & Hard to Find Vickers Hydraulic Valves: Replacement Finder

If you have landed here you are probably holding a Vickers valve that nobody lists any more. Vickers became Eaton, Eaton Hydraulics became Danfoss, and along the way large parts of the industrial valve catalog were discontinued, renumbered or quietly dropped. The valve itself is usually fine. The part number just stopped existing.

Step 1: work out which kind of valve you have

Valve type How to recognise it What it does
Directional control Rectangular body with a subplate face underneath, one or two solenoid coils on the ends, manual override pins. Sends oil to one side of a cylinder or motor. Vickers DG3V, DG4V, DG5V and KCG families.
Relief Cartridge or small in line body with an adjusting screw and locknut, or a fixed cartridge stamped with a PSI figure. Caps system pressure. Often a screw in cartridge inside a pump or manifold.
Unloading Usually built into the pump cover on a PVB or PVH, a spool and check assembly rather than a standalone valve. Dumps pump flow to tank once the accumulator or circuit is charged.
Flow control Body with a metering adjustment and often a reverse free flow check. Priority versions have three ports. Meters flow to an actuator, or splits priority and excess flow.
Check Simple in line or cartridge body, no adjustment, one direction only. Stops reverse flow, holds load, or protects a circuit branch.

Vickers unloading valves

Most searches for a Vickers unloading valve are really about the unloading assembly inside a PVB or PVH piston pump cover, not a standalone valve. It is a spool and check arrangement, and when it fails the pump either will not unload or will not build pressure.

Vickers directional control valves and coils

Directional valves are the family most often quoted as discontinued, usually because the exact spool and coil combination was built to order. The valve body almost always survives, so in practice a rebuild means a seal kit, a spool, or a coil.

Why your Vickers valve shows as discontinued

  • Brand transitions. Vickers to Eaton to Danfoss. Numbers were re engineered at each step and old references were retired rather than mapped.
  • Built to order combinations. Directional valves were configured per spool, actuation and voltage. Low volume combinations were the first to disappear.
  • Superseded by a newer frame. The replacement exists but has a different interface, so it is not a drop in.
  • Sub assemblies never sold separately. Plenty of internal parts only ever shipped inside a pump or manifold assembly.

How do I identify a Vickers relief valve with no markings?

Fixed cartridges rarely state their setting on the outside. Identify the pump or manifold it came from, the port size and the pressure the circuit needs to see, and match from there. Our cartridge table above lists the common settings from 250 to 2500 PSI against their part numbers.

Can a Vickers directional valve be rebuilt?

Usually yes. The body is rarely the failed part. Most repairs are a seal kit, a spool, or a solenoid coil, all of which we stock for the DG4V and DG5V families.

Is a Vickers unloading valve the same as a relief valve?

No. A relief valve caps pressure by bleeding excess oil. An unloading valve dumps the whole pump output to tank once the circuit or accumulator is charged, so the pump runs at near zero pressure until it is needed again. On PVB and PVH pumps the unloading function is built into the pump cover.
