The Vickers 50V is the largest single frame in the V series industrial vane pump range, covering 72 to 109 USGPM. Like the rest of the series it is built around a replaceable cartridge kit, but the 50V uses a pressure plate and a wear plate sub-assembly rather than the flex-side plate found on the VQ frames, and it carries a felt wiper behind the shaft seal that has its own assembly instruction. Do not skip the felt wiper. The 50V drawing calls it out specifically: saturate the felt wiper with oil before assembly. A dry wiper is abrasive against the shaft and will shorten the life of a new shaft seal.

How to Rebuild a Vickers 50V Vane Pump
A 50V rebuild is a cartridge job. The wearing parts, cam ring, rotor, vanes, pressure plate and wear plate, come as a matched cartridge kit, and the correct repair is to replace that kit rather than individual pieces. This is the heaviest pump in the V series, so support it properly on the bench. Budget three hours.
Step 1: Clean and Drain
Wash the outside of the pump before anything comes apart and drain the remaining oil. Grit left on the housing will find its way into the new cartridge. Read the drained oil: bronze glitter points to the cartridge, wear plate bushing or bearing, steel points to the shaft or rotor.
Step 2: Note Rotation and Remove the Inlet Cover
Check the 294959 arrow tag and record the rotation direction before anything comes apart, then scribe the cover to housing relationship and the port positions. The four 278739 cover screws are torqued to 250-270 lb.ft, so expect them tight; loosen them evenly in a crossing pattern and lift inlet cover 278740 straight off.
Step 3: Withdraw the Cartridge Kit
Lift out the cartridge as an assembly: pressure plate 278736, cam ring, rotor 278738 with its 10 vanes and inserts, and wear plate sub-assembly 278737. Note which face of the cam ring pointed toward the cover, because the ring is directional and a reversed ring will not pump correctly. The two 225800 pins locate the cartridge; check they have not stayed in the cover.
Step 4: Shaft, Bushing, Felt Wiper and Seal
Remove the retaining ring and press the shaft out from the drive end. Inspect bushing 243585 in the wear plate sub-assembly, and inspect the shaft seal running surface for a wear groove, since a grooved shaft will leak straight through a new seal. Recover the felt wiper and replace it if it is hardened, glazed or contaminated.
Step 5: Inspect and Decide
- Cam ring: look for a wear step at the two lift zones. Any ridge you can feel with a fingernail condemns the whole cartridge kit.
- Rotor slots: check for bell mouthing at the outer edge, which lets the vanes cock and chatter.
- Vanes and inserts: chipped or rounded leading edges mean the pump has been running cavitated. Fix the inlet or it will happen again. Vane kit 922613 covers all 10.
- Pressure plate and wear plate: scoring or bronze pickup on the running faces condemns them. The wear plate comes as sub-assembly 278737 complete with its bushing.
- Housing bore: check for fretting where the cartridge locates. At 50V flows a fretted bore lets the cartridge move under load.
Step 6: Reassemble and Torque
- Fit a complete new cartridge kit for your capacity code from the table above. Never mix a new cam ring with old vanes; they wear as a matched set.
- Fit the cam ring the correct way round for the rotation you recorded from the arrow tag.
- Saturate the felt wiper with oil before assembly, and apply a small amount of grease to the inner circumference of the shaft seal before the shaft goes in.
- Fit all new seals, including O-rings 154113 and 154111 and back-up ring 271826, lubricated with clean hydraulic oil rather than grease.
- Confirm the two 225800 locating pins are seated before the cover goes on.
- Prefill the housing with clean oil, then oil the threads and torque the four 278739 cover screws to 250-270 lb.ft evenly in a crossing pattern.
- Refit the 294959 arrow tag so the next technician can read the rotation.
Step 7: Test and Run In
Turn the shaft by hand; it should rotate smoothly with no tight spots. Start the machine unloaded at low speed, bleed the circuit, and confirm the pump primes within a few seconds. Run unloaded for several minutes before applying pressure, and check for shaft leaks and case temperature.
Common 50V Faults and the Parts That Fix Them
- Whining or chattering under load: worn cam ring and vanes, or a restricted inlet. At 50V flows the inlet is very often the real fault; check it first.
- Oil weeping at the shaft: worn shaft seal, or a grooved shaft if the leak returns quickly. A dry felt wiper accelerates both.
- Low flow at rated speed: worn cartridge kit.
- Leak at the cover joint after rebuild: cover screws not brought to the full 250-270 lb.ft, or torqued dry instead of oiled.
- Pump turns but will not build pressure: cam ring fitted the wrong way round for the rotation.
- Repeat cartridge failure: almost always contamination or cavitation, not the parts.
