Hydraulic Pump Making Noise: Whine, Growl or Knock?
Hydraulic pumps are not silent, but they are consistent. Once you know what a given pump sounds like healthy, any change in that sound is diagnostic information, and it usually arrives well before the failure does. The trick is telling the three main noises apart.
Match the sound to the fault

Cavitation: the pump cannot fill
Cavitation happens on the inlet side. If the pump cannot draw fluid fast enough to fill its chambers, pressure in those chambers drops far enough that the oil vaporizes. Those vapor cavities are then carried round to the outlet, where system pressure collapses them instantly.
Each collapse is a microscopic implosion against a metal surface. Millions of them pit the valve plate, the port plate and the vane tips. The noise you hear is the collapse itself.
What causes it
- Clogged suction strainer, the most common single cause.
- Fluid level low enough to uncover or nearly uncover the suction pickup, especially on slopes.
- A suction hose that has collapsed internally. The outside can look perfect.
- A partially closed suction isolation valve. Check after any tank work.
- Oil far too thick for the temperature, so it cannot flow into the pump fast enough.
- Pump mounted too far above the reservoir, or an inlet line that is too long or too small.
Do not run a cavitating pump. Unlike most hydraulic faults, this one damages hardware every second it continues. If the pump is growling, shut down and find the restriction.
Aeration: air in the fluid
Aeration sounds similar but comes from the opposite problem, air getting in rather than fluid failing to arrive. The tell is the oil itself. Look in the reservoir and you will see foam or a milky, cloudy appearance.
Where the air gets in
- Loose or damaged fittings on the suction line. These leak air in without leaking oil out, so there is nothing to see on the floor.
- A failed pump shaft seal drawing air past the lip.
- Return lines discharging above the fluid level, whipping air into the tank.
- Fluid level too low for the return flow to settle before being drawn back in.
- A cracked or porous suction hose.
The trick for finding it: with the system running, brush a little hydraulic oil around each suction-side joint in turn. When you reach the leaking joint, the oil is drawn in, momentarily seals the gap, and the note changes. That is your fitting.
A pump shaft seal that is drawing air is a seal kit job, and worth doing promptly, because aerated oil oxidizes fast and damages everything downstream.
Whine that is new
Most piston and vane pumps whine. What matters is change. A whine that has become louder, changed pitch, or acquired a rough edge usually means bearing wear or rotary group wear: slipper faces, cylinder barrel, valve plate, or a vane cartridge that has worn its ring.
Confirm before condemning: measure case drain flow at pressure against the manufacturer rated figure. A pump whining and flowing well over rated case drain is worn internally. A pump whining with normal case drain is usually a bearing.

Knocking on valve shifts
A hard knock or thump when a directional valve shifts is usually not the pump at all. It is decompression shock, a large volume of compressed fluid releasing suddenly. Fixes live in the circuit: a slower valve shift, decompression valving, or an accumulator. Worth solving, because the shock loads the pump every time it happens.
