How to Identify an Oilgear Hydraulic Pump

Every Oilgear piston pump carries an identification nameplate on the housing with a type code and a serial number. The type code is not decoration: each field in it changes which parts fit. Rotation decides the valve plate and the swashblock. Port arrangement decides the valve plate kit. Shaft code decides the shaft and bearing kit. Seal letter decides the seal kit. Get one field wrong and the parts will not fit.

This page shows how to read the code on each Oilgear family, and which fields matter when you are ordering parts. Once you have decoded yours, the Oilgear parts catalogs carry the factory exploded view and every service kit number for your frame.

The six fields that decide which parts you need

Field Where it sits What it changes
Seal material Field 7 on PVWJ, PVM and PVG Decides the seal kit outright. PVWJ defaults to V (Viton); PVM defaults to B (Nitrile); PVG defaults to V (Viton). Ordering the wrong material is the single most common Oilgear parts mistake.
Rotation L or R Left hand (CCW) and right hand (CW) pumps use different valve plates and different swashblock kits. The saddle bearings swap positions too.
Valve plate / port type S, G, D or T Rear, side, thru-shaft side, or top/bottom. Each has its own valve plate kit number, and on PVWJ not every combination exists for every size.
Shaft code Y, B, S, C, D, K, L or R Sets the shaft and bearing kit. The same letter means a different shaft on each frame size, so the frame has to be right before the letter means anything.
Design series A1, A2, B1, B2, F1 Oilgear changed parts between design series. On PVM the series letters do not follow frame order at all, B1 is the A frame.
Serial number stamped beside the type code Some parts changed mid-production run. When a kit is listed as differing before or after a serial break, this is what settles it.

Read this one carefully: on PVM the design series does NOT run in frame order. B1 is the A frame, A1 is the B frame and A2 is the C frame.

PVWH and PVW run 150-300 SSU petroleum oil. PVWW is the water-containing-fluid version for 27-30 SSU fluids such as water glycol, and needs a flooded inlet with no inlet filter.

  1. Photograph the nameplate, the whole plate, in focus.
  2. Note the port arrangement (rear, side, top/bottom) and whether the pump has a thru-shaft with a cover plate or an adapter on the back.
  3. Note the shaft keyed or splined, and its diameter or tooth count.
  4. Tell us the fluid: petroleum oil, water glycol or phosphate ester.
