Hydraulic Pump Not Building Pressure? Work Through It in This Order

Start from the principle, because it saves hours: a hydraulic pump produces flow, not pressure. Pressure only appears when that flow meets resistance. So the pump will not build pressure almost always means the flow is finding an easier way back to tank than through the work.

Your job is to find that easier path. There are only so many places it can be.

The one test that saves the most time. Isolate the pump and its relief valve from the rest of the circuit, either by closing a downstream valve or blocking the pressure line as close to the pump as is safe. If pressure now builds normally, the pump is fine and something downstream is bypassing. If it still will not build, the problem is the pump, its control, or the relief valve. One test, and you have halved the search.

The seven causes, in order

1. The relief valve is dumping

A relief set too low, stuck open, or with a damaged seat or spring will return flow to tank before useful pressure develops. This is the single most common cause. Contamination lodged under the poppet does the same thing intermittently, which is why the fault sometimes comes and goes.

Check: the relief and its return line will be warm to hot. Try adjusting the setting up slightly while watching a gauge. If pressure does not respond at all, the valve is not controlling.

2. The directional valve is not shifting

An open-center valve in neutral is supposed to send pump flow straight to tank at near-zero pressure. If a solenoid has failed, a spool is stuck, or the pilot pressure is missing, the valve never leaves that state and you will never see pressure.

Check: confirm the solenoid is energized and the spool is actually moving. On a Vickers DG4V or DG5V you can often feel or hear the shift. The model code decoder will tell you what actuation and spring arrangement you should have.

3. Wrong rotation direction

This one catches people out after a pump replacement. Most hydraulic pumps are built for one direction only. Run backwards, many will turn, make noise, and produce almost nothing.

If pressure disappeared immediately after fitting a new or rebuilt pump, check rotation before anything else. Confirm the rotation of the pump from its model code and compare it against the actual direction of the prime mover, viewed from the shaft end.

4. The pump has lost its prime, or the inlet is restricted

A pump that cannot fill cannot deliver. Low fluid, a clogged suction strainer, a collapsed or kinked inlet hose, a closed suction isolation valve, or air drawn in past a shaft seal will all starve it. The give-away is noise. A starved pump rattles or growls rather than whines.

Check: fluid level with the machine in its working position, the suction strainer, and the inlet hose for soft or collapsed sections. More detail in hydraulic pump making noise.

5. The compensator is set too low or is de-stroking early

On a pressure-compensated variable pump, the compensator caps pressure by reducing displacement. Set too low, contaminated, or with a weak spring, it will de-stroke the pump long before you reach working pressure.

Check: the compensator setting against the pressure you actually need, and against the system relief. The compensator should be set below the relief. Our A10VSO compensator adjustment guide covers the ranges and the procedure.

6. Internal leakage in the pump

Worn slipper faces, a scored valve plate, a worn vane cartridge or excessive clearances let fluid slip internally. The classic signature is pressure that builds and then collapses under load, or a system that works fine cold and fails once warm.

Check: measure case drain flow at pressure and compare against the manufacturer figure. A case drain running well above rated flow means the rotary group is worn.

7. Something downstream is bypassing

A cylinder with failed piston seals, a hydraulic motor with a worn rotary group, a cross-port relief that is not seating, or a check valve installed backwards will all let flow escape. This is exactly what the isolation test at the top of this article finds.

Check for cylinders: extend fully, hold pressure, and crack the rod-end line. Continuous flow from a fully extended cylinder means the piston seals are passing.

What usually needs replacing
