The Vickers 45VT is the thru-drive version of the 45V fixed displacement vane pump, the largest thru-drive in the V series. The input shaft passes straight through so a second pump can be bolted to the back and driven from the same motor, and the parts that define a 45VT build are the adapter plate, coupling and, on BP models, a spacer. There are four variants: VTA, VTB, VTBP and VTC. The pumping cartridge is a standard 45V section with a 12 vane rotor, and its cover bolts carry the highest torque figure of any V series thru-drive at 344 to 371 N.m. How to Rebuild a Vickers 45VT Thru-Drive Vane Pump

A 45VT rebuild is a standard 45V cartridge job plus the thru-drive hardware at the back. Rebuild the pumping section as normal, then give the coupling and adapter their own inspection, because a worn coupling is the fault that most often brings a thru-drive back a second time. This is a heavy pump with very high cover bolt torque, so support it properly and use a wrench that genuinely reaches 371 N.m. Budget three hours.

Step 1: Identify Your Thru-Drive Type

Before you order anything, work out whether you have a VTA, VTB, VTBP or VTC. The adapter plate, coupling, coupling kit, retaining ring count and seal kit all change with the type, and a BP build additionally needs a spacer kit. Getting this wrong is the single most common ordering error on a 45VT.

Step 2: Clean, Drain and Mark

Wash the outside of the pump before anything comes apart and drain the remaining oil. Read the drained oil: bronze glitter points to the cartridge or bearing, steel points to the shaft, rotor or a failing coupling. Scribe the cover to housing relationship and the port positions, and mark the adapter plate orientation.

Step 3: Remove the Rear Pump and Adapter

Remove the second pump if one is fitted, then undo the four adapter plate bolts (298147 on an A or B, 298148 with washers 582519 on a C) and lift the adapter plate off. Recover the coupling and its retaining ring, noting how many rings your build uses: one on a VTB, two on a VTBP. On a BP build also recover spacer 588725, washer 427700 and the two 205436 screws.

Step 4: Withdraw the Cartridge Kit

Undo the four 87947 cover bolts and lift the cover straight off. These are torqued to 344-371 N.m, so expect them very tight; loosen evenly in a crossing pattern. Withdraw the cartridge as an assembly: inlet plate 578903, cam ring, rotor 578900 with its 12 vanes and inserts, and the outlet plate. Note which face of the cam ring pointed toward the cover. The two 220888 pins locate the cartridge.

Step 5: Inspect the Cartridge and the Coupling

  • Cam ring: look for a wear step at the two lift zones. Any ridge you can feel with a fingernail condemns the whole cartridge kit.
  • Rotor slots: check for bell mouthing at the outer edge, which lets the vanes cock and chatter.
  • Vanes and inserts: chipped or rounded leading edges mean the pump has been running cavitated. Vane kit 02-136718 covers all 12.
  • Coupling: inspect the splines for wear, twist or rounding. This is the part a thru-drive kills, and a worn coupling will chew the splines on a new rear pump within hours. Replace it with the coupling kit for your type rather than the bare coupling.
  • Adapter plate pilot: check the register bore for fretting, which lets the rear pump run misaligned.

Step 6: Reassemble and Torque

  • Fit a complete new cartridge kit. Never mix a new cam ring with old vanes; they wear as a matched set.
  • Fit all new seals from the seal kit for your model: 920201 on a VTA, 920203 on a VTB, 02-136931 on a VTBP, 920205 on a VTC, or the F3 equivalent.
  • Confirm the two 220888 locating pins are seated before the cover goes on.
  • Fit the coupling kit and the correct number of retaining rings for your type.
  • On a BP build, fit both the adapter kit and the spacer kit. One without the other will not assemble correctly.
  • Prefill the housing with clean oil, then torque the four 87947 cover bolts to 344-371 N.m (255-275 lb.ft) and the four adapter bolts to 55.2-67.8 N.m (40-50 lb.ft), both evenly in a crossing pattern.

Step 7: Test and Run In

Turn the shaft by hand with the rear pump fitted; it should rotate smoothly with no tight spots or notchiness through the coupling. Start the machine unloaded at low speed, bleed both circuits, and confirm each pump primes. Run unloaded for several minutes before applying pressure, and load each circuit separately.

Common 45VT Faults and the Parts That Fix Them

  • Rear pump fails repeatedly: worn coupling splines. Replace the coupling kit and check the adapter plate register for fretting.
  • Knocking or rattle at the back of the pump: coupling wear or a missing retaining ring. A VTBP takes two.
  • Whining or chattering under load: worn cam ring and vanes, or a restricted inlet. At 45VT flows the inlet is very often the real fault; check it first.
  • Oil weeping at the shaft: worn shaft seal, or a grooved shaft if the leak returns quickly.
  • Leak at the cover joint after rebuild: the 87947 bolts not brought to the full 344-371 N.m.
  • BP build will not go back together: spacer kit 02-136817 missing. BP models need both the adapter kit and the spacer kit.
