The Vickers 25V, 30V and their VQ high performance equivalents are fixed displacement balanced vane pumps built around a replaceable cartridge kit. The VQ cartridge uses a flex-side plate and a 10 vane rotor, and the whole wearing assembly, ring, rotor, vanes and plates, is replaced as one matched kit. That is what makes these pumps economical to rebuild rather than replace.   • Bronze faces must be installed toward the rotor. This is the single most commonly missed instruction on a VQ cartridge, and getting it wrong wrecks the pump.
  • Shaft seal: wipe the outside diameter of the seal with oil before pressing it into the body, then apply grease to the seal inside diameter before installing the shaft.
  • The drawing is parts information only. Use overhaul manual I-3144-S for the full maintenance procedure.

Reversing Cartridge Kit Rotation

The VQ cartridge can be converted between right and left hand rotation. The procedure printed on the drawing is:

  1. Remove the two 413834 screws.
  2. Reverse the locations of inlet support plate 430805 and outlet support plate 419079.
  3. Reinstall the two screws hand tight only.
  4. Use the pump cover to align all sections of the cartridge.
  5. Remove the cover carefully, then tighten the two screws to 50 lb.in.

Skipping the cover alignment step leaves the cartridge sections out of register, which is a common cause of a converted pump that will not build pressure.

How to Rebuild a Vickers 25V or 25VQ Vane Pump

This is a cartridge job. The wearing parts, cam ring, rotor, vanes and the support plates, come as a matched cartridge kit, and the correct repair is to replace that kit rather than individual pieces. Budget two to three hours.

Step 1: Clean and Drain

Wash the outside of the pump before anything comes apart and drain the remaining oil. Grit left on the housing will find its way into the new cartridge. Read the drained oil: bronze glitter points to the cartridge or bearing, steel points to the shaft or rotor.

Step 2: Mark Orientation and Remove the Cover

Scribe the cover to housing relationship and the port positions before undoing anything, because these pumps can be reassembled rotated. Remove the four cover screws (96168 on a 2*VQ or 119805 on a 3*VQ) evenly in a crossing pattern and lift the cover straight off.

Step 3: Withdraw the Cartridge Kit

Lift out the cartridge as an assembly: inlet support plate 430805, cam ring, rotor with its 10 vanes and inserts, flex-side plate and outlet support plate 419079. Note which face of the cam ring pointed toward the cover, because the ring is directional. The two 422207 pins locate the cartridge; check they have not stayed in the cover.

Step 4: Shaft, Bearing and Seal

Remove the retaining ring and press the shaft out from the drive end. Inspect the shaft seal running surface for a wear groove, since a grooved shaft will leak straight through a new seal. Check whether your pump is a single or double shaft seal build before ordering, because the kits differ: 920021 single, 920022 double.

Step 5: Inspect and Decide

  • Cam ring: look for a wear step at the two lift zones. Any ridge you can feel with a fingernail condemns the whole cartridge kit.
  • Rotor slots: check for bell mouthing at the outer edge, which lets the vanes cock and chatter.
  • Vanes and inserts: chipped or rounded leading edges mean the pump has been running cavitated. Fix the inlet or it will happen again. The vane kit covers all 10.
  • Flex-side plate and support plates: scoring or bronze pickup on the running faces condemns them. Flex-side plate kit 923956 is the service part.
  • Housing bore: check for fretting where the cartridge locates.

Step 6: Reassemble and Torque

  • Fit a complete new cartridge kit for your capacity code from the table above. Never mix a new cam ring with old vanes; they wear as a matched set.
  • Install the bronze faces toward the rotor. This applies to the flex-side plate and the support plates.
  • Fit all new seals from kit 920021 or 920022, lubricated with clean hydraulic oil rather than grease.
  • Wipe the shaft seal outside diameter with oil before pressing it into the body, then grease the seal inside diameter before the shaft goes in. Use a proper seal driver so it is not cocked.
  • Confirm the two 422207 locating pins are seated before the cover goes on.
  • Prefill the housing with clean oil, then torque the four cover screws to 65-75 lb.ft evenly in a crossing pattern.

Step 7: Test and Run In

Turn the shaft by hand; it should rotate smoothly with no tight spots. Start the machine unloaded at low speed, bleed the circuit, and confirm the pump primes within a few seconds. Run unloaded for several minutes before applying pressure, and check for shaft leaks and case temperature.

Common 25V and VQ Faults and the Parts That Fix Them

  • Whining or chattering under load: worn cam ring and vanes, or a restricted inlet. Check the inlet first.
  • Oil weeping at the shaft: worn shaft seal, or a grooved shaft if the leak returns quickly.
  • Low flow at rated speed: worn cartridge kit.
  • Pump will not prime: air leak on the suction side, or vanes stuck in the rotor slots.
  • No pressure after a rotation conversion: the cartridge sections were not aligned with the cover before the two 413834 screws were tightened.
  • Rapid cartridge failure after rebuild: a bronze face installed away from the rotor.
