Vickers TA1515 & TA1919 Tandem Piston Pumps: Parts Catalog, Service Data & Rebuild Guide
Vickers TA1515 & TA1919 Tandem Piston Pumps: Parts Catalog, Service Data & Rebuild Guide
The Vickers TA series are mobile tandem units that drive a piston pump section and one or more vane pump sections from a single input shaft. TA1515 is the dual 15 frame build and TA1919 the dual 19 frame, and both are commonly supplied with a V10, V20 or V1010 vane section on the back. They are found on aerial lifts, refuse bodies, cranes and utility trucks. RestoPower supplies OEM or aftermarket equivalent seal kits, rotating groups, cartridge kits, shafts and valves for every TA combination.

How to Rebuild a Vickers TA1515 or TA1919 Tandem Pump
A TA unit is really two or three pumps sharing one shaft, so treat it as separate rebuilds carried out in sequence. Most TA failures are confined to one section, and identifying which section has failed before teardown saves a great deal of time and parts.
First: Work Out Which Section Failed
Isolate each circuit and check pressure and flow section by section. A weak piston section with a healthy vane section behind it is the common pattern, because the piston section carries the higher duty. If the shaft has seized or the case is full of debris, rebuild every section, since debris migrates through the shared case.
Before You Start
- Steam clean the outside and drain the case. Note whether the debris is bronze (vane or bearing), steel (rotating group) or aluminium.
- Mark the relative orientation of each section and the port positions before separating them. TA stacks can be reassembled clocked wrong.
- Lay the sections out in the order they came off. Cover ends and cartridges are not interchangeable between sections.
- Note the pressure rating stamped on the unit. You need it to order the correct prefill check valves.
Step 1: Separate the Sections
Remove the through bolts evenly and lift the rear section straight back off the drive coupling (389354 on the TA1515). Support each section as it comes free; the coupling and drive splines will drop if unsupported. Keep each section with its own hardware.
Step 2: Rebuild the Vane Section
- Withdraw the cartridge kit as an assembly. Note which face of the cam ring points to the cover.
- Inspect the cam ring for a wear step at the two lift zones. Any ridge you can feel means the whole cartridge kit is replaced, not just the vanes.
- Check the rotor slots for bell mouthing and the vanes for chipped edges.
- Fit a complete new cartridge kit. Vanes, rotor, ring and plates wear as a matched set and mixing old and new shortens the rebuild badly.
Step 3: Rebuild the Piston Section
- Remove the end cap evenly and note the valve plate orientation before it moves. A reversed valve plate destroys the pump in minutes. On the TA1515 the valve plate comes as sub-assembly 923768 complete with its two 390219 bearings.
- Slide out the rotating group, keeping the nine pistons in their original bores.
- Inspect the cylinder block face, valve plate kidney ports and piston shoes. Replace shoes as a set, never singly, or fit rotating group kit 923062.
- Check the yoke (325689) and the saddle surfaces for fretting.
- Remember both TA1515 rotating groups are identical, so a full rebuild needs two of every rotating group part.
Step 4: Shaft, Bearings and Couplings
Inspect the drive splines between sections. Worn or twisted splines are common on TA units that have run with a noisy inlet, and a worn coupling will chew a new section quickly. Identify your shaft from the table above: a TA1515V-1 build takes shaft 397737 and a TA1515V-2 takes 397736 with key 58303. Replace shaft seal 343573 and both shaft bearings as standard, and check the shaft seal running surface for a groove.
Step 5: Reassemble and Torque
- Fit all new seals and O-rings from seal kit 923769, lubricated with clean hydraulic oil.
- Install each cartridge kit the correct way round and confirm the four dowel pins (167237) seat.
- Reassemble the stack in the original order and clocking, engaging the couplings squarely.
- Fit the correct prefill check valves for your pressure rating from the table above. Four are required.
- Torque the two 1306 screws to 75-80 lb.ft, the four 329776 bolts and two 1272 screws to 42-45 lb.ft, and the four 584068 screws to 50-55 lb.in.
- Prefill every section with clean oil before the last cover goes on.
Step 6: Test and Run In
Turn the shaft by hand; it should feel smooth with all sections fitted. Start at low speed with the system unloaded, bleed each circuit, then load each section separately and confirm pressure and flow before returning the machine to work. If a section will not make its rated pressure, check the prefill check valves before suspecting the rotating group.
Step 7: Confirm Each Circuit Under Load
Run each circuit at working pressure in turn and watch case drain flow and case temperature. A TA that runs cool on one circuit and hot on another has an internal leak in the hot section. Confirm both before the machine goes back to work, because a marginal section will fail again quickly under mobile duty cycles.
Common TA Faults
- One circuit weak, the other fine: that section only. Rebuild it and inspect the coupling.
- Will not make rated pressure after rebuild: wrong prefill check valves fitted. Match them to the pressure rating of the unit.
- Whine under load: inlet restriction or aeration, usually shared across sections.
- Metal in the case: rebuild every section, the case is shared.
- Leak between sections: gasket 317162 or the interstage O-ring, both in the seal kit.
- Oil weeping at the shaft: shaft seal 343573, or a grooved shaft if it returns quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you rebuild a Vickers TA1515 tandem pump?
Work out which section failed first by checking pressure and flow circuit by circuit, then mark the clocking and separate the sections. Rebuild the vane section with a complete cartridge kit and the piston section with rotating group kit 923062 and valve plate sub-assembly 923768, keeping the nine pistons in their original bores. Replace shaft seal 343573 and both bearings, fit seal kit 923769 and the correct prefill check valves for your pressure rating, then torque the two 1306 screws to 75-80 lb.ft and the four 329776 bolts to 42-45 lb.ft and run each circuit in separately.
What seal kit fits a Vickers TA1515?
Seal kit 923769. The valve plate sub-assembly is a separate kit, 923768, and it includes the two 390219 bearings. The rotating group kit is 923062, and because both rotating groups in a TA1515 are the same you need two of them for a full rebuild.
Why will my TA1515 not make rated pressure after a rebuild?
Most often the wrong prefill check valves. Four are required and they are selected by the pressure rating of the unit, from 323822 at 2000 PSI up to 374589 at 5000 PSI. Check the rating stamped on your pump against the table on this page before suspecting the rotating group.
What is the difference between TA1515 and TA1919?
The numbers give the frame sizes of the two piston sections. TA1515 pairs two 15 frames, TA1919 pairs two 19 frames, so the TA1919 carries more displacement and duty.
Do I have to rebuild every section?
No, if the failure is confined to one section and the case oil is clean. If the case shows metal, rebuild everything, because the sections share a case and debris migrates between them.
