Vickers PVH Piston Pumps (PVH57, PVH74, PVH98, PVH131, PVH141): Parts Catalog & Rebuild Guide

Vickers PVH Piston Pumps: Parts Catalog, Service Data & Rebuild Guide

The Vickers PVH series piston pumps are variable displacement, pressure compensated axial piston pumps built for high pressure industrial service, rated up to 250 bar. The range covers the PVH57 and PVH63 frames through to the largest PVH131 and PVH141. All are cross referenced to Eaton / Vickers overhaul manual M-2210-S. RestoPower supplies OEM or aftermarket equivalent seal kits, rotating groups, shafts, valve plates, bearings and control kits for the complete PVH series.

How to Rebuild a Vickers PVH Piston Pump

PVH pumps run at high pressure, so a rebuild is less forgiving of contamination or a mis-set control than a low pressure vane pump. Work through the steps below with the service data for your frame open alongside. Decode your model number first if you are unsure which frame you have; our PVH74 model code page walks through a full code character by character.

Before You Start

  • Wash the pump exterior thoroughly. At PVH pressures, a single piece of grit in the rotating group will end the rebuild early.
  • Drain the case and inspect the oil. Steel glitter means the rotating group has gone and a reseal will not save it.
  • Count and record the turns on the compensator adjustment before backing it off, and photograph the control and port orientation.
  • Check the tenth character of your model code. An S is a single shaft seal, a D is a dual shaft seal, and they take different service parts.

Step 1: Remove the Control

Remove the compensator or control assembly, keeping shims, springs and spool together and in order. Inspect the spool for scoring and the bore for varnish. A sticking control is a very common cause of a PVH that will not de-stroke or will not hold its setting, and it is frequently misdiagnosed as a worn pump.

Step 2: Remove the End Cap and Valve Plate

Loosen the end cap bolts evenly in a crossing pattern and lift the cap straight off. The valve plate usually stays on the cap face. Note which face was toward the cylinder block before anything moves. A reversed valve plate destroys a PVH within minutes of start-up. Cross check the plate against the valve plate table above for your pump type and rotation.

Step 3: Withdraw the Rotating Group

Draw out the cylinder block with its pistons, shoe retainer and retainer plate as one assembly. Keep the pistons in their original bores. There are nine piston and shoe assemblies on every PVH frame. On the larger PVH131 and PVH141 frames the rotating group is heavy, so support it properly rather than pulling it out by the shaft.

Step 4: Shaft, Bearings and Saddle

Remove the shaft retaining ring and press the shaft out from the drive end. Inspect the saddle bearings and the swash pivot faces, which carry the full load reaction at 250 bar and are a common wear point on high hour pumps. The saddle bearing screws (690339, 2 required) torque to only 3.6-4.4 N.m, so do not over tighten them on reassembly. Check the shaft seal running surface for a groove.

Step 5: Inspect and Decide

  • Cylinder block face: flat and unscored. Radial scratches you can catch a fingernail on condemn it.
  • Valve plate: replace if the kidney ports show erosion or cavitation pitting, which is common on PVH pumps that have run with a restricted inlet.
  • Piston shoes: check retention and end float. Replace as a complete set of nine, or fit the rotating group kit for your frame.
  • Saddle bearings: replace on any full rebuild at this pressure class.
  • Shaft splines: inspect for twist or wear if the pump is shaft driven through a coupling.

Step 6: Reassemble and Torque

  • Fit every seal from the kit, lubricated with clean hydraulic oil rather than grease.
  • Fit the correct shaft seal for your build, single or dual, per the tenth character of the model code and the kit table above.
  • Refit the valve plate the right way round and confirm the locating pin is seated.
  • Apply Grade RC30 compound to the control rod and bias rod threads and torque both to 82-91 N.m (60-67 lb.ft).
  • Torque the four yoke screws to 13-15 N.m on PVH57 to PVH81, or 31-37 N.m on PVH98 to PVH141. The screw part number changes with the frame.
  • Shim the shaft to obtain 0.01-0.10 mm (.0004-.004 in.) axial end play.
  • Prefill the case with clean oil before closing it up. Never dry start a PVH.

Step 7: Test and Run In

Turn the shaft by hand; it must rotate smoothly. Start at low speed with the compensator wound out, bleed the case and lines, then return the setting to the turns you recorded. Run unloaded for several minutes, then raise pressure in stages while watching case drain flow and case temperature. Excessive case drain flow at pressure means the rotating group is still leaking.

Common PVH Faults and the Parts That Fix Them

  • Oil weeping at the shaft: worn shaft seal. On the PVH74, PVH81, PVH98 and PVH106 that is shaft seal 589332; on the PVH131 and PVH141 it is 864200.
  • External leaks at the end cap or ports: hardened O-rings, cured by the full seal kit. PVH74 and PVH81 share kit 02-102262.
  • Slow to build pressure or will not hold the setting: worn control piston or compensator seals.
  • Noise and cavitation at start-up: check the inlet first, then the case-to-inlet check valve and seals.
  • High case drain flow: internal leakage past the block face or shoes, meaning a rotating group rebuild.
  • Repeat rotating group failure: the fluid is not clean enough. The drawings call for ISO 16/14/12 or cleaner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you rebuild a Vickers PVH piston pump?

Remove the compensator control keeping its shims and spool in order, take off the end cap and note which face of the valve plate was toward the cylinder block, withdraw the rotating group keeping the nine pistons in their original bores, press out the shaft and replace the saddle bearings and shaft seal, then fit a new rotating group kit and seal kit, torque the control and bias rods to 82-91 N.m with Grade RC30 compound, shim to 0.01-0.10 mm axial end play, prefill the case and run in unloaded before raising pressure in stages.

What is the control rod torque on a Vickers PVH?

82 to 91 N.m, which is 60 to 67 lb.ft, on both the control rod and the bias rod, with Grade RC30 compound applied to the threads. This figure is the same across every PVH frame from the PVH57 to the PVH141.

What seal kit fits a Vickers PVH74?

Double shaft seal kit 02-102262 covers both the PVH74 and the PVH81. For a leaking shaft specifically the part is shaft seal 589332, with retaining ring 126911, and two of each are required if your pump is built as a dual seal.

What rotating group kit does a Vickers PVH131 take?

Rotating group kit 877419 for the PVH131 and 02-322898 for the PVH141. Eaton recommends complete replacement via the rotating group kit rather than replacing the cylinder block, pistons and shoe cage individually.

Is my PVH single or dual shaft seal?

The tenth character of the model code answers it. An S is single and a D is dual. A dual seal build needs two shaft seals and two retaining rings. See the PVH74 model code breakdown.
