Vickers PVM & PFB Piston Pumps: Parts Catalog, Service Data & Rebuild Guide

Vickers PVM & PFB Piston Pumps: Parts Catalog, Service Data & Rebuild Guide

The Vickers PVM series (PVM018, PVM020, PVM045, PVM050, PVM057, PVM063, PVM074, PVM081, PVM098, PVM106, PVM131, PVM141) are modern open circuit variable displacement axial piston pumps. The PFB series (PFB5, PFB10, PFB20, PFB45) are the fixed displacement inline piston pumps from the same family, and M-PFB and M-MFB are their motor equivalents. RestoPower supplies OEM or aftermarket equivalent seal kits, rotating groups, shafts, saddle bearings, valve blocks and control parts across both ranges.

How to Rebuild a Vickers PVM or PFB Piston Pump

PVM and PFB share the same basic architecture: a rotating group running against a valve plate, driven by a shaft on saddle or roller bearings. The PVM adds a swash and control that the fixed displacement PFB does not have, so a PFB rebuild is the simpler of the two. Work with the service data PDF for your frame open alongside.

Before You Start

  • Wash the outside of the unit before opening it. Contamination introduced at assembly kills more rebuilds than worn parts do.
  • Drain and read the case oil. Steel glitter means the rotating group has failed and a reseal will not fix it.
  • On a PVM, count and record the turns on the compensator before backing it off, and photograph the control orientation.
  • Identify your frame in the kit table above and order the kits before you start, so the pump is not sitting open on the bench.
  • Have clean hydraulic oil for assembly lubrication and lint free cloth on the bench.

Step 1: Remove the Control (PVM only)

Take off the compensator or load sensing control, keeping shims, springs and spool together in order. Inspect the spool and bore for scoring and varnish. The control mounting kit is 9900104-000 on the smaller frames and 9900105-000 from the PVM057 up. On a PFB there is no control to remove, so go straight to the valve block.

Step 2: Remove the Valve Block and Valve Plate

Loosen the valve block bolts evenly in a crossing pattern and lift straight off. The valve plate usually stays stuck to the block. Note which face was toward the cylinder block. A reversed valve plate will wreck the unit within minutes. On a PFB5, check your model code against the valve plate table above: the R and L rotation builds take different plates and they are not interchangeable.

Step 3: Withdraw the Rotating Group

Slide out the cylinder block with its pistons, shoe retainer and retainer plate as one assembly. Keep pistons in their original bores. There are nine piston and shoe assemblies on the PVM frames. The larger PVM098 to PVM141 rotating groups are heavy; support them rather than dragging them out on the shaft.

Step 4: Shaft, Bearings and Saddle

Remove the shaft retaining ring and press the shaft out from the drive end. On the PVM, inspect the saddle and cradle bearings and swash pivot faces, which are the highest loaded surfaces in the pump. Check the shaft seal running surface for a wear groove. When you refit a bearing cone, seat it against the shoulder.

Step 5: Inspect and Decide

  • Cylinder block face: flat and unscored. Radial scratches you can catch a fingernail on condemn the block.
  • Valve plate: replace if the kidney ports are eroded or the sealing lands are grooved.
  • Piston shoes: check retention and end float; replace as a complete set of nine, or fit the rotating group kit for your frame.
  • Saddle and cradle bearings: replace on any full PVM rebuild using the yoke and saddle bearing kit.
  • Swash and control piston: check for scoring, which shows as a pump that will not hold its setting.
  • Chain link: if your build uses one, replace it with a Vickers authorized chain link only.

Step 6: Reassemble and Set End Play

  • Fit every seal from the seal kit for your frame, lubricated with clean hydraulic oil rather than grease.
  • Install the shaft seal lip inward with a proper seal driver. On the PVM057 and PVM063 that is seal 513439 with collar 934058.
  • Refit the valve plate the correct way round and confirm the locating pin seats.
  • Use spacers to shim the shaft to 0,01 to 0,10 mm (0.00039 to 0.0039 in.) axial end play. This is the specification on every PVM frame.
  • Seat each bearing cone against its shoulder.
  • Prefill the case with clean oil before closing it up.
  • On a PFB5, torque the four 1253 screws to 150-180 lb.in. For all other fasteners use the values in your frame PDF above.

Step 7: Test and Run In

Turn the shaft by hand; it should be smooth. Start at low speed unloaded, bleed the case and lines, then on a PVM return the compensator to the recorded setting. Raise pressure in stages while watching case drain flow and temperature. High case drain flow at pressure means the rotating group is still leaking.

Common PVM and PFB Faults

  • Oil weeping at the shaft: worn shaft seal, or a grooved shaft if the leak returns quickly. Order the single or double shaft seal kit to match your build.
  • PVM will not de-stroke or hold setting: sticking compensator spool or scored control piston.
  • Low flow at rated speed: worn rotating group or eroded valve plate.
  • Noise at start-up: inlet restriction or aeration, not the pump. Fix the cause first.
  • Rough running or knocking after rebuild: axial shaft end play not set. It must be 0,01 to 0,10 mm.
  • PFB running hot: internal leakage past the block face, since a fixed pump has no control to blame.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you rebuild a Vickers PVM piston pump?

Record the compensator turns and remove the control, take off the valve block noting which face of the valve plate was toward the cylinder block, withdraw the rotating group keeping the nine pistons in their original bores, press out the shaft and replace the saddle and cradle bearings and shaft seal, then fit the seal kit and rotating group kit for your frame, shim the shaft with spacers to 0,01 to 0,10 mm axial end play, seat each bearing cone against its shoulder, prefill the case and run in unloaded before raising pressure in stages.

What seal kit fits a Vickers PVM057 or PVM063?

Seal kit 02-346217 covers both the PVM057 and the PVM063. The rotating group kit is 02-346216 for the PVM057 and 02-346224 for the PVM063, the yoke and saddle bearing kit is 02-346219, and the shaft bearing kit is 02-346220. The single shaft seal kit is 02-346222 and the equivalent double shaft seal kit is 02-346223.

What is the shaft end play specification on a Vickers PVM?

0,01 to 0,10 mm, which is 0.00039 to 0.0039 inch, set with spacers as required. The same figure applies across every PVM frame from the PVM018 to the PVM141.

What is the difference between PVM and PFB?

PVM is variable displacement with a compensator or load sensing control. PFB is fixed displacement with no control, so it moves the same volume every revolution and the rebuild is the simpler of the two.

Are PFB and MFB parts the same?

They share the frame. PFB is the pump, M-MFB is the motor version, and several service parts cross over, but the cylinder block and rotating group kit differ: a PFB5-(F)U(Y) takes rotating group kit 938262 while an (M)-MFB5-(F)U(Y) takes 938265. Confirm against your model code before ordering.

Which PVM frames share a seal kit?

The frames are paired: 018 with 020, 045 with 050, 057 with 063, 074 with 081, 098 with 106, and 131 with 141. Within a pair the seal kit and bearing kits are shared, but the rotating group kit is specific to the individual frame.
