How to Read an M2 Vane Motor Model Code

The M2 code is nine positions, and you need most of them to order correctly:

How to Rebuild a Vickers Vane Motor

A vane motor rebuild is a cartridge job, like the pumps, but with two differences that catch people out. First, a reversible motor's cartridge is symmetrical and the vanes are not chamfered the way a pump's are, so a pump cartridge is not a substitute. Second, the case drain matters far more on a motor: a blocked or undersized drain line will blow the shaft seal out of a freshly rebuilt motor within minutes. Budget two to three hours.

Step 1: Clean, Drain and Record the Model Number

Wash the outside of the motor before anything comes apart and drain the remaining oil. Read the drained oil: bronze glitter points to the cartridge or a bearing, steel points to the shaft or rotor. Write down the complete model number now, because the cartridge kit, shaft, body and cover are all selected from it and the tag is easy to damage during teardown.

Step 2: Mark Orientation and Remove the Cover

Scribe the cover to body relationship and the port positions before undoing anything. On a reversible motor the port positions are part of the model code, and reassembling it clocked wrong will reverse the direction of rotation. Remove the four 11165 cover screws evenly in a crossing pattern and lift the cover straight off.

Step 3: Withdraw the Cartridge Kit

Lift out the cartridge as an assembly: pressure plate sub-assembly 168450, cam ring, rotor with its vanes, and the plates. Note the spring (141792) behind the pressure plate as it comes out. The two 2478 pins locate the cartridge; check they have not stayed in the cover.

Step 4: Shaft, Bearings and Seal

Remove snap ring 109975 and press the shaft out from the drive end. There are two bearings, 1703 at the body end and 98574 at the shaft end, plus washer 317275. Replace both bearings and the shaft seal as a matter of course on a full rebuild, and inspect the shaft seal running surface for a wear groove.

Step 5: Inspect and Decide

  • Cam ring: look for a wear step at the lift zones. Any ridge you can feel with a fingernail condemns the whole cartridge kit.
  • Rotor slots: check for bell mouthing at the outer edge. On a motor this shows as poor breakaway torque and stalling under load.
  • Vanes: chipped or rounded edges. Vane kit 912073 covers the M2-200 series set, and it is included in the cartridge kit.
  • Pressure plate: scoring or bronze pickup on the running face condemns it. It is serviced as sub-assembly 168450.
  • Shaft splines: inspect for twist or wear, especially on a motor that has been driving through a coupling or a chain sprocket.

Step 6: Reassemble and Torque

  • Fit a complete new cartridge kit for your model designation: 922834 on a 25 torque rating, 922835 on a 35.
  • Fit all new seals from the seal kit, including O-ring 154087 and both 154090 O-rings, lubricated with clean hydraulic oil rather than grease.
  • Fit the shaft seal with a proper seal driver so it is not cocked.
  • Confirm the two 2478 locating pins are seated and the 141792 spring is correctly positioned before the cover goes on.
  • Prefill the motor with clean oil, then torque the four 11165 cover screws to 65-75 ft.lbs evenly in a crossing pattern.

Step 7: Test and Run In

Turn the shaft by hand; it should rotate smoothly in both directions with no tight spots. Confirm the case drain is connected, unrestricted and returned to tank at low pressure before you start it. Run the motor unloaded in both directions for several minutes, then load it gradually while watching case drain flow and case temperature. Rising case drain flow under load means the cartridge is still leaking.

Common Vane Motor Faults and the Parts That Fix Them

  • Shaft seal blows out shortly after a rebuild: case drain restricted, undersized, or teed into a pressurised return. This is the single most common vane motor failure and it is not the seal's fault.
  • Low or no breakaway torque: worn cartridge kit. The vanes are no longer sealing against the cam ring at low speed.
  • Motor stalls under load but spins freely unloaded: internal leakage past the cartridge or a worn pressure plate.
  • Runs in one direction but not the other: cartridge assembled incorrectly, or the cover refitted clocked wrong on a reversible motor.
  • Oil weeping at the shaft: worn shaft seal, or a grooved shaft if the leak returns quickly. Check the case drain first.
  • Noise and hunting at low speed: vanes sticking in the rotor slots, usually from contamination or varnish.

Almost always the case drain. A vane motor needs a dedicated, unrestricted case drain returned to tank at low pressure. If the drain is undersized, blocked, or teed into a pressurised return line, case pressure rises and pushes the shaft seal out. Fix the drain before fitting another seal.
