Vickers V10 vs V20: Which One Do You Have? Specs, Flow & Parts

If you are holding a Vickers vane pump and need to know whether it is a V10 or a V20 before you order parts, this page answers it in about a minute. Both are single vane pumps from the V series round body family, both rebuild around a replaceable cartridge, and none of their internals cross between frames. Get the frame wrong and the cartridge kit will not fit.

The pressure step is the one that matters most in practice. A V10 asked to hold 3,000 PSI will not last, so if your circuit runs above 2,000 PSI you are looking at a V20 frame whatever the old pump was.

Which one am I holding?

  1. Read the stamped code. It begins with V10 or V20, on the nameplate or stamped into the housing near the ports. That is the whole answer when the stamping survives.
  2. Compare the body. The V20 is visibly the larger casting. If you have both on a bench the difference is obvious; on its own, go by flow.
  3. Work back from the circuit. If the machine needs more than about 7 GPM, or runs over 2,000 PSI, it is a V20 frame.
  4. Count the sections. Two pump sections bolted together is not a V10 or a V20 single at all, it is a double: the V2010 or V2020.

What the rest of the code tells you

Once the frame is settled, the remaining characters carry the ring size (which sets flow within the frame), the shaft type, the port arrangement and the rotation. Rotation is given as a letter read from the shaft end, and it is not something you can change on assembly, so it has to match. Rebuild or replace?

Rebuild, in most cases. Everything that wears on either frame sits inside the cartridge kit: pressure plate, cam ring, rotor with vanes, support plate. Fit a complete new cartridge and a seal kit and the pump comes back to as new output for a fraction of a replacement.

Replace instead when the housing bore is fretted, the shaft is grooved past the seal running surface, or the mounting flange is damaged. And whichever you do, fix the inlet first if the vanes came out chipped or rounded. That is cavitation, it is a suction side problem, and a new cartridge will fail the same way if the cause is still there.

What is the difference between a Vickers V10 and a V20?
Frame size and output. The V10 runs roughly 3 to 7 GPM at up to 2,000 PSI; the V20 runs roughly 6 to 13 GPM at up to 3,000 PSI. They take different cartridge kits and share no internals.

Are V10 and V20 parts interchangeable?
No. Cartridge kits, seal kits and most components are specific to the frame. Confirm V10 or V20 before ordering anything.

How do I tell if I have a V10 or a V20?
Read the stamped code, which begins with V10 or V20. If it is worn away, go by flow and pressure: over about 7 GPM or over 2,000 PSI means a V20 frame.

Can I fit a V20 where a V10 was?
Sometimes, but check shaft, mounting and porting compatibility first. Upsizing the frame is only worth doing if the original was genuinely undersized rather than simply worn out.

Can I rebuild a Vickers vane pump myself?
Yes. Budget one to two hours with the correct cartridge and seal kit. The one thing to watch is the cam ring, which is directional: note which face pointed at the cover during teardown, because a reversed ring will not build flow.
