How do I read a Sundstrand model code such as SPV2/070?

The letters give the unit type and the number gives the frame size in cm³. SPV is a variable displacement pump, SMF is a fixed displacement motor and SMV is a variable displacement motor. The frame number maps straight to the series: 033 is Series 20, 052 is Series 21, 070 is Series 22, 089 is Series 23, 119 is Series 24, 166 is Series 25, 227 is Series 26 and 334 is Series 27. So an SPV2/070 is a Series 22 variable pump of 70 cm³ per revolution.

Which overhaul kit fits my Series 20 through 27 pump?

By series, the variable pump overhaul gasket and O-ring kits are 9510224 for Series 20, 9510227 for Series 21, 9510230 for Series 22, 9510233 for Series 23, 9510236 for Series 24, 9510239 for Series 25, 9510316 for Series 26 and 9510242 for Series 27. Fixed motors and variable motors take different kits again, so tell us whether the unit is a PV, an MF or an MV.

What is the difference between a PV, an MF and an MV unit?

PV is the variable displacement pump, MF is the fixed displacement motor and MV is the variable displacement motor. Within one frame size they share the cylinder block, piston kit, bearing plate and bearing kits, but the valve plate, end cap gasket, controls and overhaul kits differ. Ordering a pump kit for a motor is the single most common wasted order on this family.

Can you rebuild my Sundstrand pump or motor instead of supplying parts?

Reading a Sundstrand model code

A code such as SPV2/070 carries the unit type and the frame size in cm³ per revolution. Later families use their own scheme, so a Series 42 pump is called out by displacement in cm³ and a Series 90 unit by frame size 042 through 250.

Two units of the same frame with different controls and different build dates share most wear parts but not all of them. Send the full code and the serial number from the nameplate rather than the frame size alone, because the serial number decides which superseding part number applies. What fails on a Sundstrand hydrostatic unit

  • Shaft seal leaks, the most common single job and the cheapest to catch early.
  • Charge circuit failure, meaning a worn charge pump, a leaking or mis-set charge relief valve, or a clogged inlet filter. On a closed loop drive this looks exactly like a dead pump.
  • Loss of drive in one direction, usually one multifunction valve or a sticking loop flushing valve rather than the pump itself.
  • Loss of power under load, from a worn valve plate, cylinder block or piston and slipper set. An overhaul kit will not recover this; the rotating group needs attention.
  • Control and servo problems, where the displacement control, servo piston or trunnion bearings are the fault and the rotating group is fine.

Hydrostatic units wear as a system. A pump that has been run on degraded oil or with a starved charge circuit usually needs more than seals, and we will say so rather than sell you a kit that will not fix it.
