How to Rebuild a Vickers V10 or V20 Vane Pump

V-series round pumps are the easiest Vickers pumps to rebuild and the most commonly rebuilt. Everything that wears is inside the cartridge kit, so the job is really: get it apart clean, judge the cartridge, and put it back with the ring the right way round. Budget one to two hours on a V10 or V20, longer on a V2010 or V2020 double because there are two cartridges.

Step 1: Clean and Drain

Wash the outside of the pump and drain the oil before anything comes apart. Read the drained oil as you go: bronze glitter means the cartridge or bearing, steel means the shaft or rotor.

Step 2: Mark Orientation and Open the Pump

Scribe the cover to body relationship and the port positions. V-series pumps can be reassembled rotated, and on a V2010 or V2020 the two sections can also be clocked wrong relative to each other. Remove the cover bolts evenly in a crossing pattern.

Step 3: Withdraw the Cartridge Kit

Lift the cartridge out as an assembly: pressure plate, cam ring, rotor with vanes, and support plate. Note which face of the cam ring pointed toward the cover. The ring is directional; reversed, the pump will not build flow. On a double, keep the two cartridges separate and labelled, since shaft-end and cover-end cartridges are not interchangeable.

Step 4: Shaft, Bearing and Seal

Remove the retaining ring and press the shaft out from the drive end. Inspect the shaft seal running surface for a wear groove, replace the shaft bearing as standard, and on a double check the intermediate drive splines between sections.

Step 5: Inspect and Decide

  • Cam ring: a wear step at the two lift zones condemns the whole cartridge kit.
  • Rotor slots: bell mouthing at the outer edge lets the vanes cock and chatter.
  • Vanes: chipped or rounded leading edges mean the pump has been cavitating. Fix the inlet first.
  • Pressure and support plates: scoring or bronze pickup condemns them.
  • Body bore: check for fretting where the cartridge locates.

Step 6: Reassemble

  • Fit a complete new cartridge kit. Never put new vanes in an old cam ring.
  • Install all new seals lubricated with clean hydraulic oil, not grease.
  • Fit the shaft seal lip inward with a proper seal driver.
  • Confirm the cartridge locating pins seat before the cover goes on.
  • Prefill the body with clean oil, then torque the cover bolts evenly in a crossing pattern to the values in your frame PDF above.

Step 7: Test and Run In

Turn the shaft by hand; it should be smooth. Start unloaded at low speed, bleed the circuit, and confirm the pump primes within a few seconds. On a double, confirm both circuits build pressure separately before returning the machine to work.

Common V-Series Faults and the Parts That Fix Them

  • Whine or chatter under load: worn cam ring and vanes, or a restricted inlet.
  • Oil weeping at the shaft: worn shaft seal, or a grooved shaft if it returns quickly.
  • Low flow at rated speed: worn cartridge kit.
  • One circuit weak on a double: that section only. Rebuild it and check the intermediate splines.
  • Will not prime: suction air leak, or vanes stuck in the rotor slots.

What is the difference between a Vickers V10 and a V20?

Frame size and output. The V10 is the smaller frame at roughly 3 to 7 GPM and 2000 PSI; the V20 is the larger at roughly 6 to 13 GPM and 3000 PSI. They are not interchangeable and take different cartridge kits.

Can the cam ring be fitted either way round?

No. The cam ring is directional. Note which face pointed toward the cover during teardown, because a reversed ring will not build flow.

Do I rebuild both sections of a V2010 or V2020 double?

Only the failed section if the case oil is clean. If there is metal in the oil, rebuild both, because the sections share a case and debris migrates.
