How to Identify a Poclain MS Motor: Specs, Model Codes & Parts by Size
Poclain MS motors are multi cam radial piston motors, and every one of them carries its frame size in the first block of the model code. Get that number and the rest follows: displacement, torque, and which seal kit and parts catalog you need. This page has the full MS range specification table, how to read the code, and a direct route to parts for each size.
Code worn off? Send us photos and the machine it came from. We identify these regularly.
Poclain MS range specifications
Displacements shown are the nominal frame displacement. Intermediate displacements were available to order, so your motor may sit between two of these figures. Pressure rating across the range is 450 bar, about 6,500 PSI, depending on selected displacement.
| Model | Displacement cc/rev | Displacement cu in/rev | Max speed rpm | Max torque Nm | Max torque lb-ft | Power kW |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MS02 | 213 | 13.0 | 310 | 1,845 | 1,361 | 18 |
| MS05 | 468 | 28.6 | 240 | 4,005 | 2,954 | 29 |
| MS08 | 780 | 47.6 | 170 | 6,682 | 4,928 | 41 |
| MS11 | 1,048 | 64.0 | 180 | 9,000 | 6,638 | 50 |
| MS18 | 1,747 | 106.6 | 150 | 15,030 | 11,085 | 70 |
| MS25 | 2,498 | 152.4 | 140 | 21,510 | 15,864 | 90 |
| MS35 | 3,494 | 213.2 | 130 | 30,060 | 22,171 | 110 |
| MS50 | 4,996 | 304.9 | 135 | 43,065 | 31,762 | 140 |
| MS83 | 8,323 | 507.9 | 60 | 71,775 | 52,938 | 200 |
| MS125 | 12,500 | 762.7 | 40 | 76,320 | 56,290 | 240 |
Torque figures are theoretical maximum at maximum pressure and the largest displacement for that frame.
Reading a Poclain MS model code
Take MS08-2-125-F08-1120-5EGJM:
| Block | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| MS08 | Frame and displacement family. This is the block that decides which parts and seal kit fit. |
| 2 | Displacement variant within the frame. 0, 1, 2, 6 and 8 correspond to different cam track displacements. |
| 125 | Distributor and valve type. |
| F08 | Mounting flange and shaft type. F, A and R prefixes denote different flange and shaft arrangements. |
| 1120 | Brake and port configuration. |
| 5EGJM | Options: sensors, speed selection, special builds. |
For parts, the first two blocks do nearly all the work. Send us the full code and we will confirm the exact rotating group, cam track and seal kit.
MS, MSE and the rest of the Poclain range
| Family | What it is | Parts catalog |
|---|---|---|
| MS02 / MSE02 | Smallest MS frame, 213 cc | MS02 / MSE02 parts and seal kits |
| MS05 / MSE05 | 468 cc | MS05 / MSE05 parts and seal kits |
| MS08 / MSE08 | 780 cc | MS08 / MSE08 parts and seal kits |
| MS11 | 1,048 cc | MS11 parts and seal kits |
| MS18 / MSE18 | 1,747 cc | MS18 / MSE18 parts and seal kits |
| MS25 | 2,498 cc | MS25 parts catalog |
| MS35 | 3,494 cc | MS35 parts catalog |
| MS50 | 4,996 cc | MS50 parts catalog |
| MK05 / MK09 | Compact radial cam motors | MK05 / MK09 parts catalog |
| M series | Axial piston motors, M112 to M240 | M series parts catalog |
| MCR03 | Compact radial motor | MCR03 seal kits |
| MS83 / MS125 | Largest frames | Quote only, ask us |
MSE denotes the two speed and electric displacement selection variants of the same frame. They share the frame parts but not always the distributor, so quote the full code.
What wears on an MS motor
- Shaft seal. The most common single failure and the most common reason an MS motor comes off a machine. Case drain back pressure is the usual root cause, so check the drain line before refitting.
- Cam track and rollers. Spalling on the cam track means a rotating group rebuild, not a seal kit.
- Distributor face. Scoring here shows up as loss of torque and internal leakage.
- Bearings. Wheel motor duty is hard on the main bearings, and play at the flange is the tell.
- Brake discs on integral wet brake versions.
A motor that is dropping torque but not leaking is usually a distributor or cam track problem. A motor that is leaking but still pulling is usually just the shaft seal.
Frequently asked questions
How do I identify a Poclain hydraulic motor?
Read the model code on the nameplate. The first block, for example MS08 or MS18, gives the frame and displacement family, which is what determines parts and seal kits. If the plate is gone, measure the flange and shaft and send photos with the machine details.
What is the displacement of a Poclain MS18?
1,747 cc per revolution nominal, about 106.6 cubic inches, with a maximum speed of 150 rpm and theoretical maximum torque around 15,030 Nm.
What is the difference between MS and MSE?
MSE denotes two speed and electric displacement selection variants of the same frame. They share most frame parts but the distributor can differ, so quote the full model code.
Can a Poclain MS motor be rebuilt?
Yes. Shaft seals, distributors, cam tracks, rotating groups, bearings and brake packs are all serviceable. A leaking motor is very often just a shaft seal and a case drain problem.
Do you supply remanufactured Poclain motors?
We rebuild and supply parts across the MS, MSE, MK and M ranges. Send the model code and the symptom and we will tell you whether it is a seal kit, a rotating group, or a full rebuild.
