The Vickers 35VT is the thru-drive version of the 35V fixed displacement vane pump. The input shaft passes straight through so a second pump can be bolted to the back and driven from the same motor, and the parts that define a 35VT build are the adapter, shaft and coupling. There are three adapter types, A, B and C, and each takes its own adapter kit, screws and seal kit. The pumping cartridge is a standard 35V section with a 12 vane rotor.   • Seal lubrication: seals must be completely wetted at assembly with an SAE 10W motor oil of SE quality, or an industrial hydraulic oil equivalent.
  • Sealing ring 419674: install into the body before the cartridge kit goes in. Doing it in the other order traps or cuts the ring.
  • Note that the C adapter screws take roughly half the torque of the A and B adapter screws. Check which adapter you have before reaching for a wrench setting.

How to Rebuild a Vickers 35VT Thru-Drive Vane Pump

A 35VT rebuild is a standard 35V cartridge job plus the thru-drive hardware at the back. Rebuild the pumping section as normal, then give the shaft and coupling their own inspection, because a worn coupling is the fault that most often brings a thru-drive back a second time. Budget three hours.

Step 1: Identify Your Adapter Type

Before you order anything, work out whether you have an A, B or C adapter. The adapter, screws, washers, adapter kit, shaft and coupling kit and seal kit all change with the type. Note also that only F3 adapter kits are supplied for service, so a standard build will receive F3 seals in the adapter kit.

Step 2: Clean, Drain and Mark

Wash the outside of the pump before anything comes apart and drain the remaining oil. Read the drained oil: bronze glitter points to the cartridge, wear plate bushing or bearing, steel points to the shaft, rotor or a failing coupling. Scribe the inlet cover to body relationship and the port positions, and mark the adapter orientation.

Step 3: Remove the Rear Pump and Adapter

Remove the second pump if one is fitted, then undo the four adapter screws (298147 on an A or B, 298148 with washers 582519 on a C) and lift the adapter off. Recover the coupling and its retaining ring, which differs by type: 223172 on an A, 83003 on a B, 237807 on a C.

Step 4: Withdraw the Cartridge Kit

Undo the four 42023 screws and lift inlet cover 250818 straight off, then withdraw the cartridge as an assembly: wear plate sub-assembly 576265, cam ring, rotor 575478 with its 12 vanes and inserts, and pressure plate 575479. Note which face of the cam ring pointed toward the cover, because the ring is directional. The two 280031 pins locate the cartridge.

Step 5: Shaft, Bearing, Seal and Coupling

Remove retaining ring 119982 and the 193144 spirolox ring, then press the shaft out from the drive end. Replace bearing 38441 and shaft seal 394973 as standard. Inspect the coupling splines carefully for wear, twist or rounding, and remember the shaft and coupling are serviced together as a kit, so a worn coupling means fitting the shaft and coupling kit for your type.

Step 6: Inspect the Cartridge and Decide

  • Cam ring: look for a wear step at the two lift zones. Any ridge you can feel with a fingernail condemns the whole cartridge kit.
  • Rotor slots: check for bell mouthing at the outer edge, which lets the vanes cock and chatter.
  • Vanes and inserts: chipped or rounded leading edges mean the pump has been running cavitated. Vane kit 941019 covers all 12.
  • Pressure plate and wear plate: scoring or bronze pickup on the running faces condemns them. The wear plate comes as sub-assembly 576265 complete with its bushing.
  • Adapter pilot bore: check the register for fretting, which lets the rear pump run misaligned and kills couplings.

Step 7: Reassemble, Torque and Run In

  • Fit a complete new cartridge kit for your displacement code. Never mix a new cam ring with old vanes; they wear as a matched set.
  • Install sealing ring 419674 into the body first, then fit the cartridge kit.
  • Fit all new seals from the seal kit for your model, completely wetted with SAE 10W SE motor oil or an industrial hydraulic oil equivalent.
  • Fit shaft seal 394973 with the spring loaded sealing member toward the bearing.
  • Confirm the two 280031 locating pins are seated, and torque the two 289475 cartridge screws to 100-110 lb.in.
  • Prefill the housing with clean oil, then oil the threads and torque the four 42023 inlet cover screws to 140-160 lb.ft. Torque the adapter screws to 40-50 lb.ft on an A or B, or 23-30 lb.ft on a C.
  • Turn the shaft by hand with the rear pump fitted; it should be smooth with no notchiness through the coupling. Start unloaded, bleed both circuits, then load each separately.

Common 35VT Faults and the Parts That Fix Them

  • Rear pump fails repeatedly: worn coupling splines. Fit the shaft and coupling kit for your type and check the adapter register for fretting.
  • Knocking or rattle at the back of the pump: coupling wear or a missing retaining ring.
  • Whining or chattering under load: worn cam ring and vanes, or a restricted inlet. Check the inlet first.
  • Oil weeping at the shaft: shaft seal 394973 worn or fitted the wrong way round. The spring loaded member faces the bearing.
  • Leak at the cover joint after rebuild: sealing ring 419674 fitted after the cartridge instead of before it, or the 42023 screws torqued dry instead of oiled.
  • Stripped adapter screws on a C build: the C adapter takes 23-30 lb.ft, roughly half the A and B figure.
