Vickers 4520VQ / 4525VQ / 4535VQ / 4545VQ Double Vane Pump: Parts Catalog & Rebuild Guide
Vickers 4520VQ / 4525VQ / 4535VQ / 4545VQ Double Vane Pump: Parts Catalog, Service Data & Rebuild Guide
The Vickers 45xxVQ double vane pumps put a 45VQ shaft end section and a 20VQ, 25VQ, 35VQ or 45VQ cover end section on a common shaft in a single housing, giving two independent flows from one drive. These are the largest doubles in the V series and the shaft end bolts carry the highest torque in the range at 255 to 275 lb.ft. Each end carries its own cartridge kit, sized independently by the displacement codes in the model number, so a correct order needs both tables below. RestoPower supplies OEM or aftermarket equivalent cartridge kits, vane kits, rings, rotors, covers, relief valves and seal kits for every 45xxVQ build.

How to Rebuild a Vickers 4520VQ or 4545VQ Double Vane Pump
A 45xxVQ is two vane pumps sharing one shaft and one housing, so treat it as two cartridge jobs done in sequence. The shaft end is a 45VQ section and the cover end is a 20VQ, 25VQ, 35VQ or 45VQ section depending on the model, and their cartridge kits are not interchangeable. This is a heavy pump with very high inlet body bolt torque, so support it properly and use a wrench that genuinely reaches 275 lb.ft. Budget four hours for a full double rebuild.
Step 1: Identify Which Section Failed
Isolate each outlet and check pressure and flow end by end. A weak cover end with a healthy shaft end is common, because the two sections rarely see the same duty. If the case oil carries metal, rebuild both ends, since the sections share a housing and debris migrates between them.
Step 2: Clean, Drain and Mark
Wash the outside of the pump before anything comes apart and drain the remaining oil. Read the drained oil: bronze glitter points to a cartridge or bearing, steel points to the shaft or a rotor. Scribe the cover to housing relationship and both port positions, and note your cover type, because a flow control or straight thread cover is a different sub-assembly from a plain 4-bolt cover.
Step 3: Remove the Cover and Cover End Cartridge
Remove the four 1296 cover bolts evenly in a crossing pattern and lift the cover straight off. If an integral relief valve is fitted, remove it and note its setting code. Withdraw the cover end cartridge as an assembly: inlet support plate, cam ring, rotor with its 10 vanes and inserts, flex-side plate and outlet support plate 419500. Note which face of the cam ring pointed toward the cover, and check the two 422206 locating pins.
Step 4: Remove the Shaft End Cartridge
Undo the four 87947 inlet body bolts and separate the body. These are torqued to 255-275 lb.ft, so expect them very tight; loosen evenly in a crossing pattern. Withdraw the shaft end cartridge: inlet support plate 430807, cam ring, rotor 283871 with its 10 vanes and inserts, flex-side plate and outlet support plate 415382. Keep the two cartridges separate and labelled.
Step 5: Shaft, Bearing and Seal
Remove the retaining ring and press the shaft out from the drive end. Inspect the shaft seal running surface for a wear groove, since a grooved shaft will leak straight through a new seal. Check whether your pump is a single or double shaft seal build before ordering, because the kits differ: 920025 single, 920026 double.
Step 6: Inspect and Decide, End by End
- Cam rings: look for a wear step at the two lift zones on each ring. Any ridge you can feel with a fingernail condemns that whole cartridge kit.
- Rotor slots: check for bell mouthing at the outer edge, which lets the vanes cock and chatter.
- Vanes and inserts: chipped or rounded leading edges mean that section has been running cavitated. At 45VQ flows the inlet is very often the real fault.
- Flex-side plates and support plates: scoring or bronze pickup on the running faces condemns them. Flex side plate kits are 923954 at the shaft end and 923955 at the 20VQ cover end.
- Relief valve: a valve that will not hold its setting is usually a tired 239766 spring or a scored poppet seat.
Step 7: Reassemble, Torque and Run In
- Fit complete new cartridge kits at both ends for your capacity codes. Never mix a new cam ring with old vanes; they wear as a matched set.
- Install the bronze faces toward the rotor on the flex-side plate and both support plates at each end.
- Install the relief valve into the cover before the cartridge kit goes in.
- Fit all new seals, wipe the shaft seal outside diameter with oil before pressing it in, then grease the seal inside diameter before the shaft goes in.
- Confirm the locating pins are seated at both ends, then torque the two 416426 cover end cartridge screws to 30 ± 5 lb.in and the two 380109 shaft end cartridge screws to 105 ± 5 lb.in.
- Prefill both sections with clean oil, then oil the threads and torque the four 87947 inlet body bolts to 255-275 lb.ft and the four 1296 cover bolts to 40-50 lb.ft, both evenly in a crossing pattern.
- Turn the shaft by hand; it should rotate smoothly. Start unloaded at low speed, bleed both circuits, and load each end separately to confirm pressure and flow.
Common 45xxVQ Faults
- One outlet weak, the other fine: that section's cartridge kit only. Rebuild it and check the inlet.
- Whining or chattering under load: worn cam ring and vanes, or a restricted inlet. At these flows check the inlet first.
- Oil weeping at the shaft: worn shaft seal, or a grooved shaft if the leak returns quickly.
- System pressure capped below normal: integral relief valve set low or spring 239766 tired.
- Leak at the inlet body joint after rebuild: the 87947 bolts not brought to the full 255-275 lb.ft, or torqued dry instead of oiled.
- Rapid cartridge failure after rebuild: a bronze face installed away from the rotor.
- Metal in the case: rebuild both ends, the housing is shared.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you rebuild a Vickers 4520VQ double vane pump?
Work out which section failed by checking pressure and flow at each outlet, then scribe the clocking, remove the four 1296 cover bolts and withdraw the cover end cartridge, undo the four 87947 inlet body bolts and withdraw the shaft end cartridge, press out the shaft and fit the shaft seal kit for your build. Fit complete new cartridge kits at both ends with all bronze faces toward the rotor, refit the relief valve into the cover first, torque the cartridge screws to 30 and 105 lb.in respectively, then oil the threads and torque the 87947 bolts to 255-275 lb.ft and the 1296 bolts to 40-50 lb.ft.
What is the bolt torque on a Vickers 4520VQ?
The four 87947 inlet body bolts torque to 255 to 275 lb.ft with the threads oiled, and the four 1296 cover bolts to 40 to 50 lb.ft, also oiled. The cartridge screws are far lower: 30 plus or minus 5 lb.in on the cover end and 105 plus or minus 5 lb.in on the 45VQ shaft end.
What cartridge kit fits the shaft end of a 4545VQ?
The shaft end is a 45VQ section, so it is selected by capacity: 42 GPM takes 416435, 47 GPM takes 421234, 50 GPM takes 416436, 57 GPM takes 421233 and 60 GPM takes 416437. The F3 equivalents are 419511, 421954, 419510, 421955 and 419509.
What seal kit fits a Vickers 4520VQ?
Single shaft seal kit 920025, or 920026 for a double shaft seal build. The F3 equivalents are 920027 and 920028. Check which build you have before ordering, because the cartridge kits also come in standard and F3 versions.
Are the two cartridge kits in a 4520VQ the same?
No. The shaft end is a 45VQ section and the cover end is a 20VQ section on a 4520VQ, a 25VQ on a 4525VQ, a 35VQ on a 4535VQ and a 45VQ on a 4545VQ. They are sized independently by the displacement codes in your model number.
