- Yoke bearing preload: shim to .007 / .009 in. using shim kit 923938. One kit preloads both yoke bearings.

How to Rebuild a Vickers PVE Piston Pump
A PVE rebuild is within reach of any competent hydraulic technician provided the work is done clean. The single biggest cause of a failed rebuild is contamination introduced during assembly, not worn parts. Work through the steps below alongside the service data PDF for your frame, which carries the frame specific torque values and wear limits.
Before You Start
- Steam clean or wash the outside of the pump before anything comes apart. Grit on the housing ends up in the rotating group.
- Drain the case and note the condition of the oil. Metallic glitter means the rotating group or bearing has failed and a seal kit alone will not fix it.
- Photograph the compensator setting and the port and control orientation before removal. PVE controls can be reassembled 180 degrees out.
- Work on a clean bench with lint free cloth, not rag. Have clean hydraulic oil ready for assembly lubrication.
Step 1: Remove the Control and Compensator
Back off and count the turns on the compensator adjustment so you can return to the original setting. Remove the four compensator screws (10358, 60-70 lb.in) and lift the assembly off, keeping its shims together. Inspect the spool for scoring; a sticking compensator spool is a common cause of a pump that will not de-stroke. Step 2: Separate the End Cap and Valve Plate
Remove the end cap bolts evenly in a crossing pattern. Lift the cap straight off so the valve plate does not drop. The valve plate often stays stuck to the cap; note which face was toward the cylinder block, because a valve plate installed backwards will destroy the pump within minutes.
Step 3: Withdraw the Rotating Group
Slide the cylinder block, pistons, piston retainer and retainer plate out as a unit where possible. Keep the pistons in their original bores. Pistons bed into their bores over time and swapping them raises leakage.
Step 4: Shaft, Bearing and Yoke
Remove the shaft retaining ring and press the shaft out from the drive end. Identify your shaft against the table above: the keyed PVE**-1 uses shaft 428883 with key 58303 and retaining ring 112531, while the splined -2 and -9 use 423415 and 424544. Inspect the yoke (409997) pivot faces and the pintle bearings. On aluminium housing PVE frames, check the housing bores for wear or fretting, which is the usual reason a PVE is written off rather than rebuilt.
Step 5: Inspect and Decide
- Cylinder block face: must be flat and unscored. Light polishing marks are acceptable; radial scratches you can catch a fingernail in are not.
- Valve plate: replace if the kidney ports show erosion or the sealing lands are grooved.
- Piston shoes: check shoe retention and end float. Any shoe that rocks or has lost its running face is scrap, and replace the whole set rather than one.
- Shaft: inspect the seal running surface for a wear groove. A grooved shaft will leak again through a new seal.
- Bearings: replace as a matter of course during a full rebuild. They are cheap relative to a second teardown.
Step 6: Reassemble and Torque
- Fit all new seals from seal kit 02-348242. Lubricate every O-ring with clean hydraulic oil, never grease.
- Install shaft seal 626933 with the lip facing inward and use a seal driver, not a socket, to avoid cocking it.
- Refit the valve plate the correct way round and confirm its locating pin is seated.
- Shim the yoke bearings to .007 / .009 in. preload using shim kit 923938. One kit does both yoke bearings.
- Fit compensator gasket 913451 with the small end of the teardrop hole pointing toward the compensator adjusting plug.
- Prefill the case with clean oil before the end cap goes on. A dry start is the second most common cause of a failed rebuild.
- Torque the six 427171 screws to 23-26 lb.ft, the four 427172 pintle cover screws to 170-190 lb.in, and plug 398071 to 40-50 lb.in.
Step 7: Test and Run In
Turn the shaft by hand before installing; it should rotate smoothly with no hard spots. Start the machine at low speed with the compensator backed off, bleed the case, then bring the setting back to the number of turns you recorded. Run at low pressure for several minutes before loading, and check case drain flow and temperature.
Common PVE Faults and the Parts That Fix Them
- Oil weeping at the shaft: worn shaft seal 626933, or a grooved shaft if it returns quickly.
- Will not build or hold pressure: sticking compensator spool, worn valve plate, or a tired rotating group.
- Will not de-stroke: compensator gasket 913451 fitted the wrong way round, or a scored compensator spool.
- Noisy at start-up: inlet restriction or aeration, not usually the pump itself. Fix the cause before rebuilding.
- Overheating with normal flow: internal leakage past the cylinder block face or piston shoes.
- Rough or noisy yoke movement after rebuild: yoke bearing preload not set. Shim to .007 / .009 in.
