  • Compensator gasket 244956: position the gasket with the small end of the teardrop hole pointing in the direction of the compensator adjusting plug. Fitted backwards it blocks the control passage.

How to Rebuild a Vickers PVQ Piston Pump

The PVQ is a quiet running pump, and one of the first signs of wear is that it stops being quiet. Because the smaller frames run at high speed, cleanliness and correct valve plate orientation matter even more than usual. Work with the service data PDF for your frame open alongside.

Before You Start

  • Wash the pump exterior before opening it. Grit introduced during assembly is the leading cause of a short lived rebuild.
  • Drain the case and read the oil. Steel glitter means the rotating group has failed and a reseal alone will not fix it.
  • Count and record the turns on the compensator before backing it off, and photograph the control and port orientation.
  • Note whether your pump has a plain pressure compensator or a load sensing control, as the parts differ. The compensator kit tables above list both.

Step 1: Remove the Control

Remove the four compensator screws (10358, 7-8 N.m) and lift the compensator or load sensing control off as an assembly, keeping shims, springs and spool together and in order. Inspect the spool for scoring and the bore for varnish. A sticking control is the most commonly misdiagnosed PVQ fault, presenting as a pump that will not de-stroke, runs hot, or will not hold its pressure setting. If the spool or body is worn, order the complete compensator kit for your model from the tables above rather than chasing individual parts.

Step 2: Remove the End Cap and Valve Plate

Loosen the end cap bolts evenly in a crossing pattern and lift the cap off squarely. The valve plate normally stays on the cap face. Note which face was toward the cylinder block before it moves. On a high speed PVQ a reversed valve plate destroys the pump almost immediately.

Step 3: Withdraw the Rotating Group

Draw out the cylinder block with pistons, shoe retainer and retainer plate as one assembly, keeping each piston in its original bore. The PVQ10 and PVQ13 piston sub-assembly kit contains nine piston assemblies. Note the spring and spacer arrangement behind the block as it comes out, along with the shoe plate (274249), spherical washer (275485) and swash plate (319245) on the smaller frames.

Step 4: Shaft, Bearings and Swash

Remove the shaft retaining ring and press the shaft out from the drive end. Inspect the swash pivot faces and bearings. Check the shaft seal running surface for a wear groove, since a grooved shaft leaks straight through a new seal. On the PVQ40 and PVQ45 the shaft seal is 471965.

Step 5: Inspect and Decide

  • Cylinder block face: flat and unscored. Radial scratches you can catch a fingernail on condemn it.
  • Valve plate: replace on any sign of kidney port erosion or cavitation pitting, common on high speed frames run with a restricted inlet.
  • Piston shoes: check retention and end float and replace as a complete set.
  • Bearings: replace as standard on a full rebuild, especially on the high speed PVQ10 and PVQ13.
  • Control piston and bore: scoring here shows as a pump that will not hold its setting. On the PVQ40 and PVQ45 the piston and rod are available as a matched kit.

Step 6: Reassemble and Torque

  • Fit all new seals lubricated with clean hydraulic oil, never grease.
  • Install the shaft seal lip inward using a seal driver so it is not cocked.
  • Refit the valve plate the correct way round and confirm the locating pin seats.
  • Fit compensator gasket 244956 with the small end of the teardrop hole pointing toward the compensator adjusting plug.
  • On the PVQ40 and PVQ45, fit stop 588936 with the white side toward the piston rod.
  • Prefill the case with clean oil before the end cap goes on.
  • Torque the four compensator screws to 7-8 N.m (60-70 lb.in). On the PVQ40 and PVQ45 torque the six 427171 screws to 31-35 N.m (23-26 lb.ft) and the four 427172 pintle cover screws to 19-21 N.m (170-190 lb.in).

Step 7: Test and Run In

Turn the shaft by hand; it must be smooth. Start at low speed with the compensator wound out, bleed the case and lines, then return the setting to the recorded turns. On a PVQ13C do not take the compensator adjustment above 2000 psi. Bring speed up gradually, since a PVQ that has been assembled dry or with a cocked seal will show it within the first minute. Watch case drain flow and temperature under load.

Common PVQ Faults and the Parts That Fix Them

  • Pump has become noisy: often the first sign of rotating group or valve plate wear on a PVQ, but check the inlet first.
  • Will not de-stroke, runs hot: sticking compensator spool, or gasket 244956 fitted the wrong way round.
  • Will not hold pressure setting: compensator spring or scored control piston. Fit the complete compensator kit for your model.
  • Oil weeping at the shaft: worn shaft seal, or a grooved shaft if it returns quickly.
  • High case drain flow: internal leakage past the block face or shoes.
