Two cautions from the service data, worth reading before you order:

  • There is no coil, coretube or part interchangeability between the 60 design and previous design valves. Check your design code.
  • Eaton specifies full flow filtration to ISO 4406 cleanliness code 20/16 up to 200 bar (3000 psi), and 18/14 above 200 bar. Most repeat valve failures trace back to missing this.

How to Rebuild a Vickers Directional Control Valve

Most Vickers valve faults are electrical, contamination related, or a tired spring, and only rarely a worn body. Work through the checks in order before dismantling anything, because a DG4V body that is genuinely worn is usually beyond economical repair while everything else on it is serviceable.

Step 1: Diagnose Before You Dismantle

Confirm the coil first. Measure resistance and compare against the coil rating, and check you have voltage at the connector under load. A dead or intermittent coil accounts for a large share of valves sent for rebuild. Then check the manual override: if the valve shifts on the override but not electrically, the fault is electrical, not hydraulic.

Step 2: Clean and Mark

Clean the valve exterior and cap the ports before opening. Mark the coil orientation and the position of any pilot or drain plumbing, because a two stage DG5V can be reassembled with the pilot drain wrong, which prevents it shifting under pressure.

Step 3: Remove the Coils and End Caps

Slide the coils off the tubes, then remove the end caps. Keep the springs and centering washers with the end they came from. Spring sets differ between spool types and swapping them changes the valve function. The correct spool accessory kit for your build is listed in the table above.

Step 4: Withdraw the Spool

Push the spool out gently from one end. It should slide with light finger pressure. Do not force it. A spool that will not move freely is telling you there is contamination or a distorted body, and forcing it scores the bore. Keep the spool with its own body; spools are lapped to their bores and are not interchangeable between valves.

Step 5: Inspect and Decide

  • Spool lands: light polish is normal. Visible scoring or bright wear rings mean contamination has passed through.
  • Body bore: hold to the light and look for scoring. A scored body is not economically repairable, so fit a replacement valve.
  • Springs: check free length against the service data. A collapsed centering spring gives a valve that will not return to center.
  • Coils: check resistance and look for heat discolouration or a cracked encapsulation.
  • Solenoid tubes and armatures: check the armature slides freely and the tube is not dented.

Step 6: Reassemble

  • Fit a complete new seal kit: 858996 for F type coils, 858995 for U type. The O-rings under the end caps and between the valve and the subplate are what usually leak.
  • Lubricate seals with clean hydraulic oil, never grease.
  • Return each spring set to the end it came from and refit the spool into its own body.
  • Refit the coils the correct way round and torque the end caps and coil nuts evenly to the service data values.
  • Check the subplate face is clean and flat before mounting, and use new subplate O-rings.

Step 7: Test

Energise each solenoid off the machine if you can and confirm the spool shifts fully both ways. Refit, then function test at low pressure before full pressure, and watch for external leaks at the subplate and end caps.

Common Vickers Valve Faults

  • Valve will not shift electrically but shifts on the override: coil, connector or supply voltage.
  • Valve shifts slowly or sticks: contamination in the spool bore, or oil that is too cold and thick.
  • Will not return to center: collapsed centering spring or a sticking spool.
  • Leaks at the subplate: subplate O-rings, included in the seal kit.
  • Two stage DG5V will not shift under pressure: pilot supply or pilot drain plumbed wrong, or a blocked pilot choke.
  • Coil burns out repeatedly: a sticking spool loading the solenoid, or the wrong coil voltage.
  • Repeat failures after a good rebuild: check filtration against ISO 4406 20/16, or 18/14 above 200 bar.

How do you rebuild a Vickers DG4V directional valve?

What seal kit fits a Vickers DG4V-3?

Can Vickers valve spools be swapped between bodies?

No. Spools are lapped to their own bodies. Always keep a spool with the valve it came out of, because swapping them causes leakage and sticking.

Are 40 design and 60 design DG4V-3 parts interchangeable?

No. Eaton states there is no coil, coretube or part interchangeability between the 60 design and previous designs. Bolt spacer kit 893225 is required if you mount a 60 design valve using 40 design bolts.
